I love the image, Jacques, of the boarding house - much in common to celebrate, plenty of differences to debate, and no shortage of oddballs in the mix. If that doesn't describe the church this side of heaven, I don't know what does.John McCallumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05239295465786034011noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5999348592503609924.post-5810750331171447832010-08-23T16:11:09.161-05:002010-08-23T16:11:09.161-05:00John, thanks for sharing.

CS Lewis, in "Mere Christianity" wrote about the common faith in an imaginary hallway of Christendom where, at the end of the day, everyone could retreat to the sanctuary of their particular confession. I like that idea, but the better/fuller metaphor is the stereotypical boarding house in those old black-and-white feel-good movies, where an eclectic collection of oddballs rented rooms under the same roof. They ate meals together and took turns using the bathroom at the end of the hall, and they all rushed out of their rooms together whenever the phone rang. Like those imaginary boarders, there is much we can share in common with other believers, and even with non-Christians (Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, etc.), but we can't linger there forever. Sooner or later, we have to abandon the fleeting comaraderie of dining tables and hallways and retreat to the quiet introspection of our individual boarding-house rooms for a few hours of sleep and study and contemplation about the day's opportunities -- gained and lost -- to be Christ, and see Christ in a houseful (nay, a worldful) of also-eccentric companions...Monsieur d'Nalgarhttp://www.levantium.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5999348592503609924.post-91057423150672309912010-08-22T19:58:56.880-05:002010-08-22T19:58:56.880-05:00Other than a peculiar emphasis on second syllables...Other than a peculiar emphasis on second syllables, the most damning thing about the CoC ultimately boils down to this: an immersant stands between sinner and salvation (shades of Romish priests, n'est pas?). Fantastical leaps of doctrine and conjured dispensations are required to explain away the undipped thief on the cross. On the other hand, they aren't all flabbergasted over a bunch of silly "left behind" eschatology. And, they sing pretty good, too...Jacques d'Nalgarhttp://www.levantium.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5999348592503609924.post-12927344500542108402010-08-19T07:40:42.084-05:002010-08-19T07:40:42.084-05:00John, the Church of Christ have wasp and the bapti...John, the Church of Christ have wasp and the baptist have bats. I attended church with her one time and they were interested in my views from my Baptist background. I enjoyed reading your blog about your most recent experience and knowing that God is continuing to work to make us one.Carol Richardsonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5999348592503609924.post-32669470779761451462010-08-18T20:42:45.795-05:002010-08-18T20:42:45.795-05:00Enjoyed the thoughts.
